Albion players have apologised after the 7-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The Seagulls were thrashed at the City Ground yesterday, with the players describing their performance as "unacceptable".

Club captain Lewis Dunk and defender Jan Paul van Hecke took to social media to express their disappointment, acknowledging the team had let down both themselves and the travelling fans.

Dunk admitted Albion had fallen well below expectations, writing: "Now the dust has settled, it’s clear we let ourselves and you down yesterday, it was unacceptable.

"Thank you to everyone who travelled or watched from home, you didn’t deserve that."

Van Hecke echoed his skipper’s sentiments, calling the performance "shocking" and accepting full responsibility on behalf of the squad.

"It’s always easy to put a message on social media when you win, but today I feel required to give you a message.

"Yesterday was unacceptable, and we take full responsibility for that," he posted.

"Despite the heavy defeat, the Dutchman remained optimistic about Albion’s ability to recover, adding: "Luckily, in football, there is always a next game to put things right."

Lone midfielder Jack Hinshelwood told fans via Instagram: "Gutted with the performance and the way we let ourselves and you fans down yesterday, but there’s no time to feel sorry for ourselves we must work even harder during the week to put things right.

"Thank you as always for your unbelievable support!"

Manager Fabian Hurzeler, who opted for an attacking set-up in the absence of midfielders Carlos Baleba and Yasin Ayari, admitted it was his lowest moment in charge.

MORE FOREST REACTION:

He said: "It’s football, and it is part of the business to deal with these days and to deal with these performances and results.

"We were all not at our highest level today.

"We all need to be honest with each other, look in the mirror, and say that is not how we want to play football, that is not how we want to present ourselves.

"We take responsibility—all of us—for this result."

The Seagulls will look to bounce back when they return to the Amex on Saturday.
